Nobody wants this article. Every man who's stuck knows the beer is part of it and would rather talk about anything else. So let's just do the math and get it over with.

What a normal week actually costs

A regular beer is about 150 calories. A tall can is 200 plus. A glass of wine is 120 to 150. A rum and coke is around 200. Whisky neat is 100, which is the only good news here.

Three beers a night, four nights a week, is 12 beers. That's 1,800 to 2,400 calories. That's most of a pound of fat every single week, before you count the wings you ordered because you were drinking.

Guys will train five days, eat chicken and rice, and wipe the whole thing out on Friday and Saturday without ever writing it down. Then they tell me their metabolism is slow.

The part that isn't calories

Alcohol pauses fat burning. Your body treats it as a toxin and clears it first, so everything else you ate that night gets stored while it deals with the drinks. It also wrecks your deep sleep, which drops your testosterone and spikes your hunger the next day. And it lowers the bar on every decision after the second drink, which is why the pizza shows up.

So a night of drinking costs you the calories in the glass, the food that came with it, the next day's cravings, and the training session you half-did because you felt like garbage.

What I actually tell guys

I don't tell men to quit. Most won't, and the ones who white-knuckle it for two weeks come back harder. I tell them to make it deliberate.

Pick your nights. Two a week, max, and know which two before the week starts. A drink on a random Tuesday because the day was rough is the habit that keeps you stuck.

Cut the volume, not the ritual. If it's the beer at the end of a shift you want, have one good one instead of three cheap ones. You'll notice you wanted the first one, not the third.

Switch the drink. Spirits with soda water or diet mix are 100 calories. A beer is 150 to 200. Over a month that's a couple pounds by itself.

Eat before, not during. A real dinner with protein before you drink means the drinks don't turn into the whole evening's calories, and you're not ordering nachos at 10pm.

Never drink your calories twice. Juice, pop and sugary mixers on top of the alcohol is how a night becomes a thousand calories fast.

The test

Log your drinks honestly for two weeks. Every one. Most men find they're at 15 to 20 a week when they thought it was six or eight. That's not a judgement. That's the number. Now you can actually do something about it.

Cut it in half and change nothing else, and most guys lose five pounds in a month.
