A lot of the men who come to me are single, or newly single, and they say some version of "I want to get back in shape before I get back out there." Fair. But they've usually got the reason half wrong, so let's fix that.
It's not the abs
Women notice a man who takes care of himself. That's real. But the thing they're noticing isn't the physique. It's what the physique tells them about the man.
A guy who trains three times a week for a year is a guy who keeps a promise to himself when nobody's watching. That shows up everywhere. In how he stands. How he talks. Whether he flinches when he catches himself in a mirror. Whether he's got the energy at 8pm to be interesting, or he's on the couch.
You can't fake that with a filter. And you can't get it from a haircut and a new shirt.
What changes, in order
The first thing that changes is how you feel walking into a room. Around week six, before anyone else can see much difference, you start standing differently because you know you're on it. That's the part that matters most and it comes first.
Then the energy. When you sleep seven hours, eat real food and train, you have gas in the tank in the evening. That's when dates happen. The tired version of you cancels.
Then the mirror. By week twelve you look like a man who lifts. Not a cover model. A man who lifts. That's the bar, and it's a lot lower than you think.
Then other people. Comments, looks, the ex who suddenly has something to say. Take the win quietly and keep training.
The trap
The trap is waiting. "I'll start dating when I've lost 30 pounds." Then you never quite get there, because there's always another 10, so you never start. Meanwhile a year goes by.
Start the training now. Start the dating in a month when you've got the habit and the first bit of momentum. You don't need to be finished. You need to be in motion. A man who's clearly working on himself is more attractive than a man who's finished and coasting.
What it won't fix
Getting in shape doesn't fix bitterness. It doesn't fix a bad attitude toward women, or the story you tell about why the last one ended. Plenty of jacked guys are miserable and alone. If that's the real issue, the gym helps because it builds discipline and self-respect, but it isn't the whole job.
What it does fix is the excuse. Once you've proven to yourself you can change something hard, "I'm just not the kind of guy who..." stops working. On anything.
The honest version
Get lean and strong because you want to look in the mirror and respect the guy looking back. Do that, and the dating takes care of itself more than you'd expect. Do it for someone else's approval and you'll quit the first week nobody notices.
Your body is the receipt for how you've been living. Make it one you'd show someone.
The free Your Bro Rob app gives you the plan, the tracking and the weekly check-in to actually get there. Start there.
